If 2023 was the year of generative AI hype and experimentation, 2024 should be when the technology really rolls up its sleeves. Moving beyond proofs of concept, I imagine companies will begin to harness AI’s possibilities in strategic ways that drive efficiency, innovation and growth. Forrester’s predictions reveal AI infiltrating workflows, software ecosystems and even insurance policies as pragmatic realities temper pie-in-the-sky dreams.

So how exactly will AI manifest in the enterprise and marketplace over the next year? Here are three projections shaping the narrative:

Prediction 1: 60% of Employees Unleash Shadow AI

By 2024, over half of workers will personally utilize AI tools without organizational approval to accomplish tasks more quickly. I’m calling this “bring your own AI” or BYOAI.

Already encroaching on some jobs, AI will become so embedded into roles that bypassing formal channels emerges as the path of least resistance. Yes, this creates huge security, privacy and compliance risks. But for many, efficiency trumps red tape.

To get ahead of this trend, companies must understand what prompts employees to go rogue then develop sanctioned AI capabilities addressing those needs. Company-wide trainings on how to use AI efficiently and ethically will be critical. Organizational inclusion is essential too, fostering a data-literate culture centered on transparency. I recommend training your teams and developing clear company policies to ensure the ethical use of AI.

Prediction 2: 85% of Companies Embrace Open-Source AI

Early generative AI exploration relied heavily on proprietary powerhouses like OpenAI to crack the code. But as priorities shift towards deployment, open-source models like GPT-J allow for greater customization to specific needs.

Between initiatives like Hugging Face Marketplace lowering barriers to open tools, the release of flexible model families such as Llama 2 and major investments in the space, open-source AI will become the enterprise standard in 2024.

This doesn’t negate proprietary giants like DALL-E, but does suggest more democratization. Companies gain options to build AI strategies reflecting their particular identity and objectives. The doors to creativity and innovation swing even wider moving forward.

Prediction 3: Insurers Will Cover AI Hallucinations

One huge generative AI challenge is when tools produce errors or content not reflecting reality, which we call hallucinations or AI Drift. As adoption accelerates across industries, mitigating risk exposure around such failures becomes paramount.

In 2024, the first insurance policies directly covering costs related to AI hallucinations will emerge. By pricing policies to account for rapidly-evolving technologies, underwriters both fill coverage gaps and position themselves at the forefront of an explosive growth market.

The bottom line is pragmatic insurance providers will lean into AI’s likelihoods rather than avoiding its risks. Doing so strengthens their competitive edge while propelling responsible innovation.

The Road Ahead

2024 paints a landscape where companies move past generative AI novelty to integrate the technology into workflows, systems and even insurance. AI becomes less about the “gee whiz” moments and more about how it improves efficiency, unlocks potential and manages threats.

The hype cycle comes back down to earth. Practicality sets in. And AI takes its rightful place as an empowering business tool when thoughtfully implemented rather than a flashy disruptor. The predictions reveal as much about organizational maturity arcs with emerging technology as they do about AI itself.

By anticipating challenges, gaps and opportunities early, enterprises can harness inevitability for advantage rather than allowing turbulence. This mentality combined with intentional utilization centered on human needs chalks a path where AI enhances workers and businesses alike thanks to foresight and responsible innovation.

2024 promises to be the year when the reality meets the rhetoric. And Reality 2.0 has Limitless potential in store. The future emerges one day at a time, but planning starts now.
