The Jobs Generative AI Is Creating For Humans

ChatGPT mania has ignited global debates on AI’s impact on jobs. Will clever bots usurp roles outright? While automation anxiety runs high, I see tremendous potential for generative AI to instead birth entirely novel positions. If you are a marketer, I emphatically believe AI won’t take your job; someone who knows how to use AI will. So, rather than framing AI as a singular job destroyer, let’s reimagine how understanding this toolkit elevates the uniquely human skills still needed to tame it – and the emerging jobs designed to do just that.

As an early adopter diving deep on AI in marketing, I stand awed by this tech’s capability. But reckless rollout without forethought risks harm. The key is developing frameworks ensuring this universe-in-a-box benefits society. That requires humans-in-the-loop guiding models toward considerate creation.

I foresee jobs not just disrupted, but formed from this intelligence influx – with some companies proactively planning teams to responsibly scale AI. What could these roles look like as shepherds of inventive technology?

Here are just a few of the emerging positions for AI enthusiasts.

AI Prompt Engineer

A prompt engineer coaches AI to deliver desired results, fine-tuning the codes triggering output. Rather than possess programming expertise, they focus fully on mastering communication nuances to elicit specific reactions.

I am already seeing this role emerge within marketing teams as users understand that generative AI can do more than just write cool copy and creative a pretty picture. If you want an example of what this position would do, here’s a look at my approach to complex prompt engineering.

I also anticipate this role will be responsible for managing the data pipelines feeding and deploying AI. As models consume company information, privacy and ethics considerations magnify. Prompt Engineers will need to ensure best practices as AI is operationalized across the organization.

Generative AI Designer

Architects already explore generative design in manipulating 3D models with speed and flexibility impossible manually. As AI digests technical constraints for endless iterations, these experts cherry-pick pieces into inspiring wholes.

Like prompt engineering, this new job description will focus on developing complex prompt sequences to create compelling design. I imagine this role will also be responsible for staying on top of emerging generative AI tools that assist in design.

Depending on the individual’s experience, this could be a position that merges with the AI Prompt Engineer role, especially for agencies where employees must wear many hats.

AI Content Reviewer

Law firms already utilize AI document analysis, but human scrutiny is necessary to spot gaps in comprehension. Content reviewers evaluate machine writing and visuals for quality assurance before release.

Basically, this is the usual Content Editor position, only now it will include reviewing AI-generated content. I would also task this role in developing processes to ensure all AI content is proofed for accuracy and that is adheres to brand and company policies, including disclosure statements.

AI Model and AI Agent Trainer

Like a professor perpetually advising doctoral candidates, trainers guide AI absorption of knowledge. Painstaking data preparation, output assessment, and model updating teach systems nuanced understanding.

I believe this position will be increasingly critical as more businesses embrace the idea of branded AI Agents designed to assist potential customers. Possessing the expertise to train LLMs and AI Agents will be an incredibly desired skill this year.

AI Systems Engineer

No one expects a newly constructed building to self-manage utilities, cleanup, and repairs. AI engineers will iterate systems for efficiency, troubleshoot issues, and streamline performance.

Now, this role could potentially fold into the usual tasks of Systems Engineers within your company. But, only if the employee understands how to design and build fault-tolerant gen AI infrastructures to support long-running large-scale training tasks.

AI Security Specialist

As bad actors weaponize technology, security experts combat threats from AI-powered cyber attacks to deepfake propaganda. Protection requires understanding malicious applications to erect formidable defenses.

Although there are more and more generative AI platforms and content creation engines that have some built-in security measures, this role will certainly be a key hire this year.

This security specialist will not only work closely with the Prompt Engineer position to ensure employees are not sharing proprietary or confidential data, they will also need to ensure real content is watermarked to separate it from deep fakes.

AI Instructor, Coach, Teacher

Yesterday’s computer literacy uplifted careers. Tomorrow’s workforce must comprehend AI’s capacities, limitations and societal implications. Demystifying the magic propels ethical adoption.

This is the position I created for myself last year. I’ve been training marketers on how to utilize generative AI and which AI tech stacks will help them to achieve their goals.

The simple fact is, this is an evolving technology that is changing every day. I don’t anticipate this role to diminish any time soon as businesses seek to identify the ways AI can improve efficiencies and enhance campaign performance.

In fact, if you are in need of AI training, click the image below and let’s connect.

AI Ethicist and Compliance Manager

Programming codes may live in a technical vacuum, but models impact humanity. Ethicists develop guidelines protecting against biases and inequities baked into systems, safeguarding rights.

This incredibly critical role will become more desirable as brands want to ensure their AI-generated outputs are free of mistakes and bias. Some may wish to fold this position into the Prompt Engineer role, but I would caution against that. While the two should work closely together, the AI Ethicist needs to create guidelines that define ethically sound paths for AI development and deployment.

They will also monitor compliance with the AI Content Reviewer to audit AI systems and verify all projects and outputs remain with moral boundaries.

Because ethical frameworks only succeed when actualized into action, the AI Ethicist & Compliance Manager would implement policies and monitor for adherence, spanning data collection, algorithmic accountability and transparency.

Custom AI Solution Developer

As leaders imagine possibilities, developers design specialized AI to capture opportunities and dissolve pain points within industries.

Customization allows out-of-the-box systems to finally fit. I believe we will continue to see this much-needed role as more enterprise brands either create their own LLMs or work with existing AI companies to build of their platforms to develop custom company-wide AI solutions.

Rather than pegging AI as a singular threat to jobs, I see it catalyzing a renaissance of uniquely human creativity as we shepherd this new power. What other emerging roles do you envision rising from this technological revolution? I believe any jobs lost will eclipse those birthed – but those formed stand essential in steering tomorrow.
