ChatGPT’s Birthday: a Wild Ride Reshaping Marketing

Can you believe it’s been a year since ChatGPT first unleashed its creative superpowers? This marketing muse has single-handedly sparked a revolution in ideation, personalization and content. But between provocative lawsuits, an incredible DevDay, a DDoS attack, attempted coups and political debates, it’s also caused PLENTY of drama during its coming of age! As your resident GenAI insider, I’m celebrating ChatGPT’s birthday day by recapping highs, lows and WTFs from the past year. Grab the popcorn people – this memoir’s got it ALL!

The 2022 Launch

From the very first questions, ChatGPT won hearts and minds by making complex topics digestible. And, let’s face it, we all asked ChatGPT to write songs and stories throughout December last year.

But the honeymoon stage ended quick when researchers exposed its factual holes! In fact, we soon discovered that AI Drift was a thing and ChatGPT was growing dummer.

Unbelievable Adoption Rates

Still, flaws couldn’t keep eager users away – traffic exploded from 150k to 1.7 BILLION visits in just 12 months…that’s more than Google and Facebook combined!

And the business benefits unlocked are just as wild. Klarna taps ChatGPT intel to predict shopping searches by category and time of day. Meanwhile Duolingo leverages its language mastery to rapidly create new products and content.

To celebrate ChatGPT’s birthday, OpenAI released a short video highlighting some of the ways people have used the platform for both work and life.

Legislators Take Note of The Risks

But increased reliance on AI meant increased anxiety too. Legislators grilled leaders over misinformation and data privacy. Lawsuits alleged content violations. And ethical concerns triggered new industry responsibility pledges.

Meanwhile, researchers documented more than 100 examples of ChatGPT spreading misinformation that advanced “false narratives” on various topics.

Growth and User Adoption Slows

By June, ChatGPT experienced its first use decline as web traffic dropped 10%.

The same month, concerns related to ChatGPT led to two separate lawsuits alleging OpenAI’s data collection and content creation practices violated copyright and privacy laws.

By July, OpenAI joined Anthropic, Google, Amazon and Microsoftin a meeting with the White House to address growing concerns about AI and the companies’ plans for ethical development. Unsurprisingly, the same month, OpenAI founded the Frontier Model Forum, a cross-company organization focused on “safe and responsible development of frontier AI models.”

A Media Courtship and Evolved Features

By August, OpenAI announced a new partnership with the American Journalism Project and committed more than $5 million for helping local news organizations use AI.

The company also launched its enterprise version of ChatGPT which offers new privacy protections for companies using OpenAI’s LLMs.

In September, ChatGPT added new multimodal capabilities, giving users new ways to engage with the AI and just days later announced the platform could finally browse the internet.

In October, The text-to-image generator DALL-E 3 was added into ChatGPT Plus and ChatGPT Enterprise, giving users easy integration between AI systems within the same platform. The same month, OpenAI (through the Frontier Model Forum) committed another $10 million toward AI safety days before President Joe Biden signed his executive order on AI.

By early November, we saw plaintiffs losing their copyright infringement lawsuits against ChatGPT and other AI systems. And, of course, no one will likely ever forget the chaos of the attempted takeover of OpenAI and ousting of Sam Altman, only to be reinstated as CEO just days later.

If nothing else, ChatGPT’s first year has certainly been interesting to watch! And, certainly the company’s success sparked a generative AI revolution that is only growing more impactful every day!

So will ChatGPT’s next chapter bring order or more wild waves? As its ubiquity climbs, we will certainly need more transparency and guardrails to match.

But make no mistake – this history-making technology is just getting started rewriting rules and reinventing what’s possible. The future rests on people and AI working creatively side by side. Here’s to many more adventures ahead!
