Apple unveiled its groundbreaking AI initiatives under the brand name “Apple Intelligence” in iOS 18 and other operating systems. This clever twist on the “AI” acronym showcases Apple’s commitment to integrating artificial intelligence seamlessly into its products, enhancing user experience and productivity. Unlike other AI systems that focus on generating poetry or images, Apple Intelligence aims to offer functionality that assists users in their daily lives through features like summarization and rich auto-reply suggestions.

Priority Notifications and Smart Replies in Messages

One of the most anticipated features of Apple Intelligence is the ability to generate notification summaries and web page summaries in Safari. This will allow users to quickly grasp the essential information without having to read through lengthy content.

These will appear at the top of the stack, allowing users to quickly identify important information at a glance. Notifications will be summarized, making it easier for users to scan through them faster. Similarly, priority messages in Mail will elevate time-sensitive messages to the top of the inbox, ensuring that users don’t miss crucial information.

Users will be able to tap to reveal summaries of long emails in the Mail app, helping them quickly grasp the main points. The Notes and Phone apps will also feature the ability to record audio and generate transcripts, with Apple Intelligence providing summaries of the transcripts for easy reference.

A new Focus feature called “Reduce Interruptions” will understand the content of notifications and show users the ones that might need immediate attention, such as a text about picking up a child from daycare later that day. This will help users stay focused on important tasks while minimizing distractions.

Smart Replies in Mail will enable users to quickly draft email responses with all the relevant details. Apple Intelligence can identify questions asked in an email and offer pertinent selections to include in the response, allowing users to send a reply with key questions answered in just a few taps.

Emoji Creator and AI-Powered Image Editing

Apple Intelligence will also introduce a new “emoji creator” feature, which generates custom emoji icons based on the user’s typing. This innovative feature will update in real-time as the user types, allowing for a more personalized and expressive communication experience beyond the standard set of emoji defined by the Unicode consortium.

The Photos app will also receive AI-powered editing features, similar to the Smart Eraser found in Google Pixel phones. This will enable users to effortlessly remove unwanted elements from their photos while maintaining the integrity of the original image.

Moreover, recordings made in Voice Memos will be automatically transcribed, making it easier for users to access and search through their audio content.

Supercharging Siri

Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, will also receive significant upgrades thanks to Apple Intelligence. With an all-new design, richer language understanding, and the ability to talk to Siri whenever convenient, communicating with the assistant will feel more natural than ever.

Siri’s extensive product knowledge will allow users to ask questions when learning how to do something new on their devices, and the assistant can provide step-by-step directions instantly. The improved language understanding and enhanced voice will make communicating with Siri feel even more natural, and the assistant will be able to understand context from previous requests, ensuring a seamless interaction.

Users will be able to seamlessly take action within and across apps using Siri. For instance, users can ask Siri to send a drafted email to specific recipients, and the assistant will know which email and app are being referenced. Siri can also perform actions across apps, such as enhancing a photo and then dropping it into a specific note in the Notes app, all without requiring users to lift a finger.

Writing Tools with and Enhanced Language Capabilities

One of the most exciting aspects of Apple Intelligence is the introduction of Writing Tools, which assist users in finding the perfect words virtually everywhere they write.

With enhanced language capabilities, users can summarize entire lectures in seconds, get concise versions of long group threads, and minimize unnecessary distractions with prioritized notifications.

Writing Tools will be available in most places where users write, including third-party apps. These tools can proofread text, rewrite different versions until the tone and wording are just right, and summarize selected text with a single tap. This will greatly enhance users’ writing experience and help them communicate more effectively.

Visual Expression with Image Playground and Genmoji

In addition to these productivity-enhancing features, Apple Intelligence will also enable delightful new ways for users to express themselves visually. The Image Playground experience allows users to create fun, original images in seconds based on descriptions and even people from their Photos library. Users can easily adjust the style and make changes to match a Messages thread, a Freeform board, or a slide in Keynote.

The dedicated Image Playground app will provide a space for users to experiment with different concepts and try out various image styles, such as animation, illustration, and sketch. Users can create custom images to share with friends in other apps or on social media, adding a personal touch to their visual communication.

Apple Intelligence will also introduce Genmoji, a feature that allows users to create brand-new, personalized emoji right from the keyboard. By providing a description, users can preview and adjust their Genmoji until it perfectly matches their intended expression. Users can even select someone from their Photos library to create a Genmoji that resembles them, adding a new level of personalization to their emoji use.

Image Wand and Memory Movies

The Image Wand feature in the Notes app will transform rough sketches into related images. By drawing a circle around a sketch with their finger or Apple Pencil, users can prompt Image Wand to analyze the content and produce a complementary visual. This feature works even when circling an empty space, as Image Wand uses the surrounding context to create a relevant picture.

Apple Intelligence will also enable users to create custom memory movies in the Photos app by simply entering a description. The AI system will find the best photos and videos that match the description and craft a storyline with unique chapters based on identified themes, arranging the photos into a movie with its own narrative arc.

Searching for photos and videos in the Photos app will become more intuitive, as users can describe what they’re looking for, and Apple Intelligence will find the relevant content. The AI can even locate specific moments in video clips that fit the search description, taking users directly to the desired scene.

The Clean Up tool in the Photos app will allow users to remove distractions from their photos with a single tap. Apple Intelligence identifies background objects, enabling users to perfect their shots while staying true to the original image.

Privacy and Data Protection

Apple Intelligence is designed with privacy at its core. The AI system is integrated into the core of Apple devices through on-device processing, ensuring that it is aware of users’ personal information without actually collecting it. With groundbreaking Private Cloud Compute, Apple Intelligence can leverage larger server-based models running on Apple silicon to handle more complex requests while still protecting users’ privacy.

Although relying on the cloud for AI may seem to contradict Apple’s previous messaging around user privacy, the company has a plan to address these concerns. Apple’s servers will employ confidential computing designs to make data processing as private as possible.

Additionally, Apple will not build user profiles based on customer data and will provide new reports explaining how user data is protected. All new features will be opt-in, and on-device techniques will be used wherever possible, giving users control over their privacy.

ChatGPT Integration and User Control

The integration of ChatGPT from OpenAI into Siri and Writing Tools provides users with even more expertise when needed, without having to switch between tools. Siri can tap into ChatGPT for certain requests, including questions about photos or documents, while the Compose feature in Writing Tools allows users to create and illustrate original content from scratch.

Users have control over when ChatGPT is used and will be asked for permission before any of their information is shared. ChatGPT is accessible to anyone for free, without the need to create an account. However, ChatGPT subscribers can connect their accounts to access paid features within these experiences, further enhancing the capabilities of Apple Intelligence.

Apple Intelligence represents a significant leap forward in AI-powered user experiences. By seamlessly integrating artificial intelligence into its operating systems and apps, the company is revolutionizing the way users interact with their devices, making tasks more efficient, communication more natural, and creativity more boundless. As these features roll out in iOS 18 and other operating systems, users can look forward to a more intuitive, personalized, and intelligent experience with their Apple devices.
