AI is transforming the way we teach and learn, there’s no doubt about it. From writing assistants to lesson planners to intelligent tutors, AI tools are becoming everyday companions for educators at every level. But with this explosion of innovation comes an important question: Which AI tools should we be using in our classrooms — and which should we avoid?
As an educator and AI consultant, I spend a lot of time helping teachers and administrators make sense of this landscape. One of the most important distinctions we need to talk about is the difference between AI tools that are built into your Learning Management System (LMS), like Canvas, versus consumer-facing AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini running in a web browser.
Security & Student Privacy First
When we talk about using AI in education, student privacy must be priority one. The major LMS platforms, Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle — are built with education-specific security in mind. They follow strict standards (FERPA, COPPA, GDPR) to protect student data.
AI tools that are officially integrated into an LMS — through a secure standard called LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) — inherit those same protections. They use school-managed authentication and limit access to course-relevant information only.
By contrast, when you use public AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini through a web browser, none of these safeguards apply. Anything you paste into the chat window may be stored, logged, or used for further training of that AI model. That could include:
- Student names
- Assignment drafts
- Grade information
- Discussion responses
- Proprietary teaching materials
This is why Human Driven AI strongly encourages educators to use LMS-integrated AI tools whenever possible — especially when dealing with any student-related data.

Contextual Awareness: Why LMS-AI Saves Time
Beyond privacy, there’s another major reason to use AI tools that live inside your LMS: context.
AI tools built into Canvas (for example, Instructure’s Gemini LTI integration, or third-party apps like Magic School AI or Learnwise AI) have secure, direct access to your course content. They can:
- See your syllabus
- Analyze assignments
- Understand module structure
- Access discussion threads
- Generate quizzes based on what students have actually read or discussed
This means you don’t have to copy/paste materials into a public chatbot just to create a quiz or summary. Instead, the AI can automatically create:
- Tailored quizzes
- Reading summaries
- Lesson plans
- Discussion questions
… all based on your course as it exists today.
Efficiency Without Compromising Safety
In short:
- Public AI tools: powerful, flexible — but risky for student data and cumbersome to adapt for each course.
- LMS-integrated AI tools: safer, context-aware, designed for educators — and much faster for building useful content without extra steps.
As we train faculty through Human Driven AI, we always recommend a layered approach:
- Public tools like ChatGPT are great for brainstorming and general idea generation (outside of any student data).
- LMS-integrated AI is the right place for anything involving course-specific materials, student interaction, or assessment design.
AI in education is here to stay. The more we can harness these tools responsibly — with security and student privacy at the core — the more they can help us focus on what matters most: teaching, learning, and human connection.
